Dash and Assaf are editors of the high school newspaper. When Assaf is drawn to third editor Verti, Dash writes a smear story about them. Ostracized and angry, Dash discovers that the school principle manipulated safety reports. His discovery is ignored until a heavy earthquake hits. Psychedelic animation blends coming of age story with a disaster movie to eye popping effect.

Directed by very talented, avant-garde comic book writer Dash Shaw, the film preserves all traits of a coming-of-age story. It has subtle sexual hints, the romanticism of youth but also teenage insecurities and angst. In addition to that, it is crammed with pop-cultural references to The Poseidon Adventure, Jaws and many others. While the main characters are drawn with a rudimentary type of animation, there is a great variety in the backgrounds and animation styles: watercolours, silhouetted figures, psychedelics, crayon and pencil drawings and some manipulated live action make for a crazy, hallucinatory collage. The stellar voice cast includes Lena Dunham, Reggie Watts and Susan Sarandon.
